Frequently Asked Questions
What is organisational culture?
“It’s the way we do things around here” is often the tag line given to organisational culture. On closer inspection it is how the participants of a particular environment think and behave. It is a culmination of beliefs, values, attitudes, assumptions, rituals, traditions, artefacts, and behaviours.
Why does my organisation, workplace, team, or group need it?
Groups of people with a connected, inclusive, and effective culture will often report that their environment is happier, more productive and performs better. This permeates through your organisation via staff and on to your customers, members, and participants.
How do you develop an effective culture?
Organisations, workplaces, groups, and team cultures range from dysfunctional to high performing. The approach here will be different for different groups, some will be at ground zero and starting out on their journey, where other groups will be performing and may look to fine tune their culture.
Who is involved in an organisational culture?
Fundamentally, everyone within the organisation, workplace, or team(s). The culture is the people and the people are the culture. Workshops can be with managers and senior leaders first, then with staff, then the whole team together. Other times it is preferred for everyone to be together from the start in a comprehensive workshop.
When should you work on your culture?
Regarding workshops and facilitated sessions, ideally a couple of times per year, to set the culture and then again to check and orientate the organisation/team. In reality, you will work on your culture every day consciously or otherwise through a cocktail of beliefs, values, attitudes, assumptions, rituals, traditions, artefacts, and behaviours.
Which types of organisations do you work with?
A diverse range of organisations extending from voluntary community groups, small and medium sized businesses, workplaces, and teams. In larger organisations it is necessary to work with individual departments too as they have their own culture that sits under the wider umbrella of the organisation.
What type of approach do you take?
I work collaboratively and in consultation with the organisation to try and understand where they are now and where they are trying to get to. I use several different methods and exercises in the workshops to engage, connect and include everyone in the group. I will often facilitate rather than lead as the knowledge is often in the room, moreover it is about the people in the organisation and we aim to create a sense of belonging.
What is the process to engage with you and how does it work?
There is an initial free 30-minute consultation, once you decide to go ahead and engage with me, we will meet for 1-1.5 hours to discuss, plan, and go over the finer details for the upcoming workshop(s). You have several options for workshops, which we can discuss during the free consultation and are listed on the contact form. However, we can tailor this for your organisations needs.
What type of culture should we have?
Your culture and environment are unique to the people and your organisation, however you can take inspiration and innovation from other cultures and researching these worldwide.
